John was born in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii in 1953 and still currently resides and bases his business there. He is a forth generation islander and the son of a Portuguese father and Chinese mother. Was raised in Palolo and Kaneohe and graduated from James B. Castle High School. Growing up on the Windward side of the island hightened an awareness of the landscape and always found it amazing to drive over the Pail and view the Koolaus. Picking up a camera did not occur until after High School and was specifically purchased to document a trip to Canada. Although always an interest, photography was not pursued as a career until 1984 at the age of 30. He left the islands to attend Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA. For a year and a half he studied intensively, working full time to support his studies. He next headed to Portland, OR to gain experience while assisting two of Portland’s best, Steve Bonini and Pete Stone. In 1987 he returned to the islands to start a Commercial studio and has been in business for the last 23 years shooting for national magazines, national and local advertising agencies and corporations. Traveling on assignment has taken him to China, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar, Bali, Palau, Yap, Fiji, Samoa, French Polynesia and the Cook Islands. Whenever possible he still pursues his passion which is landscape and nature photography. John’s work can be viewed at www.johndemello.com
